A tragic incident unfolded in Canoga Park where a mother discovered her twin 3-year-old boys unresponsive, leading to the death of one child and the hospitalization of the other in critical condition. As reported by ABC7, the authorities arrived at the 20000 block of Sherman Way after receiving a distress call around 11:30 a.m. on Thursday. The LAPD's release indicated that the children "had ingested, or been exposed to, an unknown substance."
The mother, Jestice James, was arrested and booked on suspicion of murder, her bail was set at $2 million. While she shares the home with other residents, no further investigations are being pursued against them, as per the KTLA report. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics were summoned to the scene and transported both children to the hospital, where one was pronounced dead and later identified as Josiah James by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner.
In an NBC Los Angeles article, the investigation is said to be ongoing under the supervision of the LAPD's Juvenile Division/Abused Child Unit. The tragic narrative was further compounded by a neighbor's attempt to perform CPR on the children, "I came in, there’s a kid sitting on the table, and I started giving him CPR, and my friend says, ‘Oh my God, there’s another one,'" neighbor Chris Burko recounted to KTLA.
Authorities are encouraging anyone with information about the case to come forward and contact LAPD Detective Ortiz at (818) 374-5415, or the regional Crime Stoppers hotline for those wishing to remain anonymous. This case has cut a profound gash into the fabric of the Canoga Park community, reminding all of how fragile, and indeed precious the lives of the youngest members of society are. The LAPD's continued investigation aspires to bring clarity and justice in a situation marred by sadness and shock, the administrative details furnished by an official press release from the department.
