Charlotte authorities are continuing their search for a driver involved in a deadly hit and run, turning to the community for assistance in a case that left one man dead in early June. Detectives from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit have identified a black Dodge Challenger with front-end damage as the vehicle of interest connected to the fatal incident that occurred in the North Tryon Division.
The crash took place on the 5000 block of North Tryon Street around 10:00 p.m. on June 9, 2024, when officers were dispatched to the scene after reports of a hit and run vehicle collision, upon arrival they discovered Mr. Curtis Bing, a 62-year-old male, unresponsive on the road. Despite the quick response from the Charlotte Fire Department and Medic, Bing was pronounced dead at the scene; the involved driver had already fled before authorities arrived, leaving no word or aid in their wake.
Details regarding the suspect's identity remain scant, as the focus shifts to tracking down the black Dodge Challenger, which was last seen making a swift departure from the scene of the crime. Police have issued a request for public participation, hoping someone might recognize the vehicle and come forward with information. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has yet to determine the reason behind the driver's decision to evade facing the consequences of their actions that tragic evening.
The legacy of the crash is far-reaching, not limited to the mourning of Curtis Bing's loved ones, but extending to every Charlotte resident who takes to the streets with the belief that they will return home unscathed, for this case underscores the arbitrary nature of tragedy and the somber reality that at times, our streets are walked by those who may not uphold our communal covenants of safety and responsibility.
