
An 18-year-old man from Columbus, Ohio, drowned while swimming at Gull Street Public Beach Access in Nags Head, authorities confirmed. The incident, which took place on Wednesday, involved three swimmers struggling in the ocean waters. Officials with Nags Head Fire and Rescue, alongside Nags Head Police Department, responded to the scene following a distress call at approximately 2:51 p.m.
According to QCNews, two of the swimmers made it back to the shore, with one aided by a lifeguard. However, the third, an 18-year-old visitor, was not immediately visible. A police-operated drone subsequently located the missing swimmer, though rescue efforts proved ultimately futile.
The victim was later pronounced dead at The Outer Banks Hospital. As detailed by WTKR, despite the swift action taken by first responders, the lifesaving measures applied were unsuccessful. The name of the young man has been withheld pending notification of kin. The Town of Nags Head’s spokesperson expressed their condolences, stating, "The Town of Nags Head’s thoughts are with the man’s family and friends, after this tragic event."

Nags Head officials have long cautioned about the potential dangers of ocean swimming, including strong currents and rapid weather changes.
