South Los Angeles community mourns a 15-year-old boy and grapples with the chaos unleashed by multiple street takeovers. Early Saturday morning, two teenage boys were shot during one such event near 54th Street and Western Avenue, per a KTLA report. After spotting what seemed to be a robbery, the boys were fired upon as the suspects fled, ultimately taking themselves to a hospital. Tragically, one of the teens succumbed to his injuries while the other was in stable condition.
Despite the efforts to quickly control the area, violence has continued to escalate, peaking over two days with severe incidents including a fiery crash, looting, and further shootings. Communities have voiced their fear and frustration, feeling overrun by these gatherings that are not only illegal but foment danger and destruction. "They just come, and if you're not out here, they will take over your property," Janice Johnson, a Compton resident, told NBC Los Angeles. Other areas saw opportunistic looting, as at a Wingstop on Manchester Avenue and Avalon Boulevard, where assailants stole food and drinks.
In response to this surge in activity, the Compton Sheriff's Department has invested in a dedicated team of deputies to combat the issue in their jurisdiction. "We also need the help of the community to call the station and report whenever these are ongoing," stressed Gabriela Robles, a Compton sheriff station representative.
The LAPD is encouraging anyone with information regarding the shootings to contact the South Bureau Homicide Division detectives. Tips can be provided through several channels, ensuring anonymity for those who prefer it. According to a statement from the LAPD, calls can be directed to 1-877-LAPD-24-7 or reported through the L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers hotline and their "P3 Tips" mobile application.
