The City of Dallas is bustling with energy as it rolls out several community-engaging events and initiatives designed to enhance the lives of its citizens during the summer months. In a communications release from the City of Dallas, details of the Dallas SMART Summer program were revealed, emphasizing the numerous educational and enriching programs offered by the Dallas Public Libraries (DPL). The Dallas SMART Summer campaign is highlighted by a series of events including the "Summer of Safety" program, offering free lunch for kids and a wide array of activities designed for children and teenagers – from a robotics program to culture-rich events such as a Rap Poetry Workshop and a K-Pop Extravaganza.
The learning opportunities do not stop there. The DPL's initiative continues to encourage literacy and educational pursuits with the SMART Summer Learning Program, running until August 10, which includes events that motivate reading and creative activities. With admirable numbers, “an impressive 6,500 kids and 2,200 adults have registered for the SMART Summer program,” according to the City of Dallas. The same bulletin quotes Melissa Dease, the Community Relations Administrator at Dallas Public Libraries, affirming that "You never have to pay for a program at the Dallas library," thereby underscoring the library system's dedication to accessibility and inclusion.
Additionally, as the new school year approaches, families are invited to participate in the annual MLK Center Back to School Festival on August 10. This drive-through event promises to equip students with free backpacks, school supplies, and other essentials to kick off the academic year right. Furthermore, the West Dallas Back to School Event will be held on August 3, specifically aiding youths living in the 75211, 75212, and 75208 zip codes. With sponsors like the National Council of Jewish Women and Reliant supporting the cause, the focus remains on community support and resource provision.
On a different front, Dallas residents also look forward to the Home Improvement & Preservation Major Systems Repair Program (MSRP), which offers up to $24,000 in home repair assistance for qualifying households. Applications open on August 19 and are geared towards major system repairs such as HVAC, electrical work, and plumbing, as reported by the City of Dallas. To aid potential applicants, virtual and in-person workshops started on July 15, available in both English and Spanish.
