In a merger moment that has stirred the Tex-Mex scene, Chuy's Tex-Mex, the chain that brought the flair of Austin's culinary culture nationwide, has been scooped up by Darden Restaurants Inc., a Florida-based conglomerate known for its robust portfolio of eateries including Olive Garden and LongHorn Steakhouse. Yet, as the ink dries on this deal, Chuy’s Mexican restaurants in the Fort Worth area stand their ground as family-owned bastions, carving out their distinctive legacy in Texas’ competitive dining landscape.
According to an official announcement on July 17, the Austin-originated Chuy's agreed to sell its outstanding shares to Darden Restaurants. As the Dallas Express reports, despite this acquisition, the original family-run Chuy's establishments in Fort Worth will remain independently owned, steadfast in their roots that trace back to 1982 when Jesus “Chuy” Adame unveiled his first restaurant location. Adame’s enterprise, with its earnest commitment to traditional Tex-Mex and customer loyalty, notably contrasts the wide-spanning chain that has adopted a similar namesake.
The assimilation of Chuy’s into Darden Restaurants’ fold is expected to amplify its reach, with Steven Hislop, chairman, CEO, and president of Chuy’s, expressing excitement about the partnership, as "together we will accelerate our business goals and bring our authentic, made-from-scratch Tex-Mex to more guests and communities", he commentedas per The Dallas Express. The Austin-based chain is no stranger to expansion, having consistently grown since its inception roughly four decades ago.
Contrarily, the locally-operated Chuy's restaurants in Fort Worth maintain a focus on essential Tex-Mex offerings that resonate with their patrons. "The customers always ask, ‘Are you the little guys or the big chain?’" Jesse Adame said, as per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Their menus feature under-$10 lunch specials, hearty breakfasts served until noon, and a renowned carne guisada dish, spiced beef tips that hold a special place in the hearts and stomachs of residents.
