A structure fire was reported on July 20th, at 14651 W Roscoe Bl, as the first responding Los Angeles Fire Department units encountered a one-story commercial building emitting heavy smoke, according to an LAFD Alert. The fire prompted firefighters to adopt a defensive approach as they battled the blaze, which erupted at a building noted for previous fires. LAFD's initial statement detailed that the fire was significant enough to warrant defensive operations from the start.
The situation escalated as firefighters faced a 100' x 100' vacant commercial structure; its integrity was compromised, one corner of the building had already collapsed, reported LAFD's update on the incident, while crews deployed heavy streams using various equipment including large-diameter hand lines and ladder pipes to extinguish the flames. Columns of smoke and the fervent efforts of the firefighters led to Roscoe Blvd being temporarily closed affecting the flow of traffic, as the painstaking work to dampen the inferno continued without reported injuries or risk to nearby structures.
The fire was later brought under control, with LAFD announcing a "knockdown" of the fire at 03:35PM, approximately 58 minutes after the initial response. The collective effort of 103 firefighters managed to contain and extinguish the fire without sustaining any injuries or allowing the fire to threaten other structures, and crews remained onsite to address the aftermath which included potential hazards related to the structural integrity of the now-vacant building.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are underway, with LAFD's Arson/Counter-Terrorism Section spearheading the inquiry though details regarding the origin and cause remain unknown at present, the Department is thoroughly sifting through the ashes and debris in search of answers.
