A Detroit woman, Azuradee France, has been sentenced to 35-60 years in jail for the murder of her 3-year-old son, Chayce Allen. France's sentencing comes two years after the tragic discovery of Chayce's body in a freezer at her home. The 33-year-old mother was arrested following a wellness check by Detroit police on June 24, 2022, which led to the grim finding, detailed in a report by WXYZ. The medical examiner concluded that the boy had died from blunt force head trauma, and it was believed that he had been placed in the freezer in March of that year.
During the trial, evidence of France being a victim of childhood abuse and the lack of mental health treatment was presented. Wayne County Circuit Judge Tracy Green mentioned these facts in the courtroom while acknowledging they do not excuse her conduct but do explain a lot, as reported by Detroit Free Press. The judge expressed regret that intervention didn’t occur sooner. Azuradee France received credit for 767 days already served, with the sentence a result of a plea deal where she admitted guilt to second-degree murder.
The courtroom was painted with expressions of grief and frustration from her family, as France's sister, Azuant Sauls, delivered an emotional statement. "You were supposed to protect Chayce, instead you hurt him to point where he can't come back," Sauls said, in a moment recounted by the Detroit Free Press. Sauls wore a shirt emblazoned with images of Chayce as she addressed the court and an emotional France. The defence attorney's request to excuse her client during the statement was denied by Judge Green. France sobbed throughout, with reports noting her visibly shaking during the sentencing.
Prosecutor Kym Worthy labeled the facts of this case as shocking even to the seriously jaded and emphasized the risks children face, not just from prevalent societal dangers like gun violence but also from the alleged murderer that lives in the house with them, as mentioned by WXYZ. The courtroom dynamics showed peaks of tension and urgency, with Chayce's aunt and the defense attorney engaging in emotionally charged exchanges. The prosecution conveyed that while many may have failed Chayce, it was France who bore the ultimate responsibility for his tragic and premature death.
Prior to the plea agreement, France had been facing multiple charges including felony murder, first-degree child abuse, torture, and concealing the death of an individual, as per reports by FOX 2 Detroit. A troubling history of seven rejected complaints and at least, six Child Protective Services (CPS) investigations against France were also brought to light during the proceedings. Judge Green imparted a final remark to France, urging her to remember her children, especially Chayce, throughout her incarceration and to bear the gravity of her actions as a means to ensure that the tumultuous events culminating in her sentence do not fade into obscurity.
