Tragedy struck on the Fourth of July when two drownings occurred within hours of each other along the Yuba River in Nevada County, as reported by ABC10. The first incident was brought to the attention of authorities around 1:30 p.m. near Highway 49 in the South Yuba River Recreation Area after a person was seen entering the water and failing to resurface; bystanders attempted CPR on the victim before first responders arrived and pronounced the individual dead, no life jacket was worn by the victim.
This tragic event was followed by a separate, devastating instance in which another man was discovered unresponsive at the Bridgeport Recreation Area, Nevada County Consolidated Fire officials responded to the scene for a second water rescue, it is surprising to have them back to back, as stated by Battalion Chief Josh Sunde in an ABC10 interview, emphasising the unexpected nature of the consecutive drownings.
A complex rescue operation ensued to recover the first victim, involving multiple agencies such as North San Juan Fire, CAL FIRE NEU, State Parks, and Sierra Nevada Ambulance, this incident required a technical rope rescue due to the area’s tough terrain, as detailed by the Nevada County Consolidated Fire District on FOX40.
In light of the recent incidents, fire officials are urging the public to exercise caution near the river, noting the river's fast and relentless flows and recommending the use of life jackets for those who choose to enter the water, these rivers are dangerous, the victim was noticed by a person floating down the river and bystanders pulled that person to shore, began bystander CPR, Sunde told ABC10.
The drownings followed another recent tragedy where an Oakland man lost his life at the Modesto Reservoir, while swimming with his family, adding a somber note to the holiday festivities and highlighting the dangers of water-related activities if proper precautions are not taken, this was reported by FOX40.
