After nearly two weeks on the run, escaped Carter County inmate Billy Fletcher was captured in Greenville, South Carolina. Officials reported the arrest on July 4, marking the end of an escape that began on June 20 when Fletcher walked away from a work detail at Carter County Detention Center. The Greenville County Sheriff's Office, following a tip that led state law enforcement to Fletcher's whereabouts, confirmed the inmate was arrested without incident at 8:38 p.m. Thursday, according to WJHL.
Being 43 at the time of his capture, Fletcher is now awaiting extradition back to Carter County. Held at the Greenville County Detention Center, he is detained on a fugitive from justice warrant, a detail delivered by the Greenville County Sheriff's Office. Before officials can extradite him to Carter County, he was said to be placed in the Georgetown County Detention Center.
The escape of Fletcher triggered a multi-state search, prompting authorities to comb through evidence and follow up on leads. Since walking off from the work detail at the detention center, he had become a focal point of law enforcement efforts, as reported by QC News. The successful capture is a joint effort reflective of inter-state cooperation between law enforcement agencies.
