The Maria Fire, a wildfire that erupted near Mokelumne Hill and Mountain Ranch early today, has prompted evacuations in Calaveras County, officials report. In response to the growing blaze, The Calaveras County Sheriff's Office issued evacuation orders for Zone CCU-042-B and Zone CCU-030-A, alongside warnings for Zone CCU-029. Residents in need of shelter can find refuge at the Angels Camp Fairgrounds, Mark Twain Elementary School, and Valley Springs Veterans Hall, as designated by officials, and accommodating large and small animals respectively.
As of the latest update, the Maria Fire has consumed approximately 45 acres, with containment reported at 5%, according to KCRA. This figure differs from an earlier report by Cal Fire that estimated the size at 50 acres before crews were able to more accurately map the fire area. Over 200 personnel have been deployed to manage the fire. Road closures include Jesus Maria Road, which is blocked off between Hawver Road, Music Gulch, and Highway 26.
Residents looking to stay informed can sign up for emergency notifications through the Calaveras County Emergency Notification Program and receive updates on conditions and safety directives pertinent to the fire. Options for receiving alerts include the Nixle system, which provides notifications on severe weather and other critical community updates, and PG&E’s alert service for customers who wish to get informed via text, email, or phone call.
For those living in fire-prone areas, Cal Fire recommends establishing a defensible space of at least 100 feet around homes to mitigate fire risks, ABC10 advises. Authorities also suggest creating an emergency kit that includes important documents, N95 respirator masks, and other essential supplies for a prompt evacuation. Although the exact cause of the Maria Fire remains unclear, no injuries have been reported so far in relation to this incident.
