A substantial technology failure attributed to Microsoft has led to widespread disruption, including canceled and delayed flights across the United States, with significant effects at Pittsburgh International Airport. As reported by WTAE, this disruption follows a global outage that began early Friday morning. Airlines such as United, American, Delta, and Allegiant were affected by the ground stops initiated by the Federal Aviation Administration.
The cause behind the chaos, Microsoft's outage, particularly hindered the Microsoft 365 apps and services. Yet amidst this digital gridlock, as detailed by TribLive, CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity firm, ruled out the likelihood of a cyberattack or a security incident. Microsoft communicated efforts focused on redirecting the impacted traffic, which showed signs of improvement thereafter.
Travelers like Carissa Hillman showcased resilience in the face of repeated delays. "Honestly, I’m really impressed by how everybody is just calm," she said, per WTAE. Hillman, after a series of flight delays related to her business trip and then this outage, was experiencing her third canceled flight within a short span.
