The Fort Worth Independent School District is stepping up its nutrition game with the introduction of a free dinner program for students in the 2024-25 school year. This initiative, part of a broader collaboration with food service provider Sodexo, aims to ensure that all students have access to a wholesome evening meal, meeting the five components of a reimbursable meal including grains, meat or its alternative, fruits, vegetables, and dairy, as reported by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Under this new offering, every student on campuses with an after-school enrichment program will be able to grab a free dinner, without the need to be enrolled in any after-school activities. "We are looking forward to an exciting year of positively impacting the lives of our students every day," Pamela Watson, the Executive Director of Child Nutrition Services, stated, as per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, emphasizing their partnership's spirit of creating a thriving learning environment. The meals are set to be served 15 minutes after the school day ends, extending the district's provision to three meals a day for the students.
As reported by WFAA, school officials are upbeat about the new partnership's potential for bolstering the academic environment. "We know that nutrition is an integral part of the learning process," Deputy Superintendent Kellie Spencer expressed, "and we are committed to ensuring that our students have access to healthy menu options that taste great for breakfast, lunch, and dinner". The upcoming school year is scheduled to begin on August 13, with the district preparing to welcome students back into this enhanced supportive ecosystem.
