Chaos unfolded on a Southern California freeway when two horses were killed after being struck by a vehicle, and another was saved thanks to the efforts of Good Samaritans. The incident, occurring before 9 p.m. Tuesday on the I-5 Freeway at the 210 Freeway transition in Sylmar, brought traffic to a standstill as emergency services and passersby responded to the erratic equine escape.
According to KTLA, a total of three horses somehow found their way onto the freeway, leading to a distressing situation as they ran across traffic lanes. Reports to California Highway Patrol (CHP) detailed the presence of the horses and the subsequent collisions. CHP Sgt. Frank Vargas said, "When we arrived on scene, unfortunately, we found a couple of separate scenes involving vehicles and deceased horses."
A third horse, however, was spared a similar fate when quick-thinking individuals managed to wrangle the animal to the freeway's right shoulder using a rope. Sgt. Frank Vargas referred to the rescuers as "kind of heroes" for preventing the horse from venturing further into dangerous traffic lanes. The exact circumstances leading to the horses’ freeway excursion remained unclear, with no immediate information regarding potential injuries sustained by vehicle occupants during the incident.
CBS Los Angeles reported that two of the horses died following their impact with the car, with one expiring in the middle lane and another in the No. 4 lane.
