Early Monday morning, a fire erupted at the PADNOS recycling center in Grand Rapids, sending firefighters into an hours-long battle against the flames. Crews were dispatched around 3 a.m. to the facility located at 601 Letellier SW, where they encountered a severe blaze within the building. Grand Rapids Fire Chief Brad Brown described the scene, noting that a "large amount of fire" was present and that "there's a lot of metal shavings are oils in this building that we’re dealing with," as reported by WOODTV.

Despite the challenging conditions, including the presence of reactive magnesium recycling materials and a risky bowstring roof construction, approximately 40 fire crews from the Grand Rapids Fire Department went on the defensive, employing water guns to control the perpetuating smoke and flames. "It's gonna continue to burn for hours so again, we're gonna be here all day working on this," Brown said in an interview with FOX 17 News. Visibility in the area was significantly affected, with smoke spreading across the river to the southeastern side of town.

The intensity of the fire led to the collapse of the center's roof, adding to the complexities faced by firefighting units on site. No injuries have been reported by the fire officials, and according to wzzm13, employees were not believed to be inside the facility when the fire commenced, a detail adding a sliver of solace amidst the turmoil.

JustAir reported an Air Quality Index of 73 at 11 a.m., exhibiting a noticeable increase from the early morning onset of the blaze. The fire remains under investigation, with authorities urging the public to avoid the affected vicinity, particularly Wealthy Street SW and Front Avenue SW, which have been shut down by police for safety, as Brown told WOODTV.
