A tragic incident unfolded on the waters of Lake Michigan yesterday afternoon, resulting in the drowning of a 38-year-old man from Grand Rapids. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office reported, as per WZZM 13 that at approximately 3:40 p.m., they responded to a drowning incident south of Pigeon Lake Pier. Swimming about 100 yards out, the man ultimately went underwater and failed to resurface on his own.
Bystanders at the scene pulled the man from the waters, and with urgency, began administering CPR in hopes of reviving him. FOX 17 News reports that upon the arrival of emergency services, including teams from Port Sheldon Township Fire and AMR, the efforts continued but, distressingly, did not yield a successful resuscitation.
Further details provided by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office and cited by WOODTV indicate the man, whose identity was not released, was caught in precarious conditions yesterday. Earlier that day, Holland State Park, located approximately 12 miles south of Pigeon Lake Pier, sensed the stirrings of nature's fickle temper and reported a yellow flag day, cautioning 2-4-feet waves. Meanwhile, Grand Haven State Park to the north echoed the storm's grim forecast with a red flag day, warning of more treacherous waves exceeding 4 feet.
