Houston's culinary landscape is once again demonstrating its rich diversity through the latest edition of Latin Restaurant Weeks (LRW), a festival celebrating Latin American cuisine. Spanning from July 5 to July 19, this culinary event showcases the variety of Latin food available in the city, with 83 participating restaurants serving everything from high-end dining experiences to street-side taco delights.

According to KHOU, the event, co-founded by Karinn Chavarria-Luckett, is more than just a food festival; it's an initiative supporting Latin entrepreneurs within Houston's vibrant food scene. "We only think of Latinos as the backbone of the culinary industry, those who are working in back of a house, in front of house," Chavarria-Luckett said. "So, it’s really a means to support and celebrate what makes Houston so great."

Local establishments like Teotihuacan Mexican Cafe, a family-run eatery for over two decades, have become city staples and are part of the culinary celebration. "With all of the gentrification going on, a lot of mom and pops are leaving. It does give them somewhat of a comfort," shared Teotihuacan General Manager Anthony Galvan to KHOU. Galvan’s father started bussing tables and washing dishes, now his family runs the renowned café.

Meanwhile, newcomers like Comfort Foodies, infusing Dominican soul food with Southern comfort, are also benefiting from the exposure. Owner Elsa Matthews, in an interview with KHOU, praised the event saying, "It’s a huge huge bonus for us, absolutely. Their reach is millions of people compared to us." Matthews, born to Dominican parents, has found that her heritage blends seamlessly with her Houston roots in the kitchen.

For those looking to participate in the flavorsome journey, information about the restaurants and deals can be found on the dedicated Latin Restaurant Weeks website. As noted by Click2Houston, places like The Lymbar, nestled in Houston’s Ion District, are offering palate-enticing lunch and dinner deals. The Lymbar, a returning participant to LRW, is one such establishment serving up curated meals that are testament to the creativity, and culinary innovation inherent in Latin American cuisine.

In addition to the delectable food and festivities, LRW is also a time for giving back. The non-profit Feed the Soul Foundation will award certain participating restaurants with $10,000 grants, further contributing to the growth and stability of Houston's Latin culinary businesses. The support these grants provide can be instrumental for emerging and existing restaurants as they continue to make their mark on Houston’s food panorama.
