The law enforcement community and members of the public gathered Friday to honor the life and service of Harris County Deputy Fernando Esqueda, who was killed in the line of duty. The funeral service for Deputy Esqueda took place at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in downtown Houston, as reported by ABC13. A day before, a viewing and rosary were held for Esqueda, giving the community a chance to say their final goodbyes.
Deputy Esqueda, a five-year veteran, was working overtime after Hurricane Beryl when he responded to a call and was fatally shot in what officials described as an ambush. The 28-year-old deputy had been a part of a Violent Persons Warrant Task Force and was in an undercover vehicle during the incident. In a statement obtained by FOX26 Houston, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said, "It's always a loss when we lose a hero. Not only for us as an agency, but it's a loss for our community."
The incident that led to Deputy Esqueda's death had begun with an aggravated assault at a Little Caesars Pizza on Wallisville Road. Ronald "Ronnie" Palmer Jr., the 44-year-old suspect, reportedly became upset over a pizza order, assaulting an employee before fleeing. Authorities tracked the suspect's car to a location about six miles away, leading to the encounter that would take Deputy Esqueda's life. Palmer, along with 26-year-old Dremone Francis, have since been charged in relation to the deputy's murder.
"He was a hero, a guardian, a beacon of justice in a world that sometimes seems to have forgotten what those words truly mean," Harris County Deputy Investigator Steven Campos told FOX26 Houston. His sister, Vanessa, also a Harris County Sheriff's Deputy, remembered him for the joy he brought into their lives, describing him as the life of the party. According to the same report, ammunition found at Dremone Francis' residence was consistent with one of the murder weapons used in the deputy's killing. Prosecutors mentioned that Francis admitted his involvement in disposing of the guns connected to the crime.
