The Houston Public Library has been awarded a substantial grant, amounting to $200,000, specifically designated to bolster its Journey to Citizenship classes. The grant arrives courtesy of the Houston Endowment, a move that ensures the library can continue its vital educational services aimed at adults pursuing U.S. citizenship.
With the influx of new funds, the library plans to introduce new citizenship kits which will include a range of handy tools like civics flash cards, and, a pocket-sized copy of the Declaration of Independence. In line with HPL's plans, an "Introduction to U.S. History" DVD will also be part of these kits, aimed at helping users conquer the various aspects of the naturalization exam. According to Houston Public Library's announcement, MYLink cardholders have the advantage of borrowing these resources to aid in their quest for citizenship.
The Journey to Citizenship classes cover the 100 questions of the civics exam, diving into subjects such as American government and history, rights and responsibilities of citizenship, and integrated civics. Spanning seven weeks, each 90-minute class session is designed to build up mastery in reading, writing, and civics vocabulary necessary for the exam. The program's design goes beyond mere exam preparation; it focuses on instilling confidence and a foundational understanding of what becoming a U.S. citizen entails.
More than just civics class, the Houston Public Library doubles as a go-to destination for passport processing services within the city. Passport services are accessible at six HPL locations, including the recently launched Walker Neighborhood Flight Library, at 11630 Chimney Rock Rd. For those needing to apply or renew a passport, detailed information and appointment scheduling can be found by visiting Houston Library Passports or by making a call to 832-393-7277.
