Houston residents, particularly the elder community, are set to receive a much-needed assist from hometown rapper Megan Thee Stallion's Pete and Thomas Foundation, following the havoc wrought by Hurricane Beryl. In partnership with the non-profit Bread of Life Inc., an Emergency Power Program has been launched, which will provide free generators to ensure that senior citizens have continual access to electricity during severe weather events—mitigating the risks posed by power outages. Click2Houston reports the motivation behind the initiative—Megan Thee Stallion's personal call to action to help those still suffering in the stifling aftermath of the disaster.
As the city grapples to recover and beat the heat, this strategic move aims to directly address the dangers presented by the soaring temperatures. "It’s been painful to watch the elderly population in Houston suffer without electricity during these devastating storms,” Megan expressed in a statement obtained by Click2Houston.
Moreover, Bread of Life's Executive Director and Founder, Rudy Rasmus highlighted, "Through our partnership with the Pete and Thomas Foundation, our goal is to provide generators to our most vulnerable seniors ahead of storms or other events that knock out power so there is no interruption in service,” CW39 reports.
This collaboration between Megan Thee Stallion's non-profit and Bread of Life is part of the foundation's broader mission to support and uplift women, children, the elderly, and underserved communities globally. Details about the Emergency Power Program, including how the community can support the initiative, are available on the Bread of Life website. In addition to the Emergency Power Program, residents are urged to take precautionary measures against the high temperatures that continue to affect the area. Tips on staying safe and hydrated during extreme heat have been shared by CEER Houston through CW39 Houston's Kara Willis.
