An Illinois resident has entered a guilty plea in connection to the violent events that shook the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Robin Lee Reierson, 69, of Schiller Park, Illinois, faced charges for assaulting law enforcement officers during a day of chaos that interrupted the certification of the 2020 presidential election results. The U.S. Department of Justice reported that Reierson pleaded guilty to a felony charge before U.S. District Judge Reggie B. Walton yesterday. Sentencing has been set for October 16, 2024.

Despite the joint session of the U.S. Congress being called to count the electoral votes, court documents detailed Reierson's involvement on that day, which consisted of using his body as a battering ram against a police barricade. Amid the confrontation, which involved officers from both the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and the United States Capitol Police (USCP), Reierson urged other rioters not to relent, allegedly proclaiming, “Don’t stop, keep going,” as reported by the U.S. Department of Justice. His arrest didn't take place until August 23, 2023, by the FBI in Illinois, as per the FBI's account.

Following a collaborative investigation involving the FBI's Chicago and Washington Field Offices, Reierson's case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia in partnership with the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section. Authorities have also acknowledged the assistance provided by the U.S. Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police Department in this extensive investigation.

Since the breach, efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice have not waned; more than 1,450 individuals face charges across many states, with over 500 of those accused of assaulting or impeding law enforcement, setting a serious precedent. "The investigation remains ongoing," quoted from the Justice Department, is dedicated to holding accountable those found guilty for their roles in attempting to subvert a foundational process of democracy. Reierson, among them, will be awaiting his sentencing later this year.
