Irvine Police Unearth Illegal Firearms and Drugs Following Arrest of Suspects in Tesla Charger TheftSource: Facebook/Irvine Police Department

The streets of Irvine witnessed a police investigation that stemmed from a seemingly trivial theft but eventually uncovered a cache of firearms, ammunition, and drug paraphernalia. According to the Irvine Police Department's Facebook post, on June 9, surveillance video from an apartment complex captured a suspect breaking into a Tesla and pilfering the vehicle charger and adapters.

Good old-fashioned detective work led the Irvine PD to identify the suspects, thanks to the surveillance footage and a coincidental connection between the victim and one of the suspects. Joseph Douglas Morgan, 34, of Irvine, and Brianna Mackenzie Pierce, 34, of Costa Mesa were pinpointed by detectives, although it's unclear if luck, or perhaps irony played a role in their capture. Morgan's acquaintance with the victim is, if nothing else, a compelling detail that perhaps underscores the small world we inhabit.

A subsequent search of the suspect's residence revealed a trove of firearms that included ghost guns, unregistered firearms, and unlawfully assembled firearms. High-capacity magazines and a stockpile of ammunition further hinted at potential dangers extending beyond property theft. The Irvine PD's report also detailed the recovery of drug paraphernalia that suggested intent for illicit sales. Morgan is on parole, and Pierce is on probation, both for prior weapons charges.

As often observed in these cases, the initial crime can frequently surface the tip of a much larger iceberg. The discovery of the stolen Tesla charging cables and adapters at the suspects' residence seems almost ancillary when juxtaposed with the other illicit items seized by officers. "Because we are a full service police department," the Irvine PD's Facebook statement quipped, "Joseph and Brianna got a free ride to the Orange County Jail." This detail, while delivered with a touch of humor, underscored the department's commitment to addressing crime in all its facets within their jurisdiction.
