
Tragedy struck in Lake Elsinore where an assault turned deadly in a business parking lot on Riverside Drive, as reported by the Riverside Sheriff's Office. On the night of July 20, 2024, deputies received a call at 9:32 p.m. regarding an assault with a deadly weapon and upon their arrival found a male victim suffering from multiple stab wounds. Despite immediate medical aid, the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The swift actions of the deputies led to the development of suspect information, and they tracked the individual suspected in the violent incident to an apartment complex on Joy Street where he was detained without incident even though the suspect had fled the crime scene initially after the stabbing. The suspect, 50-year-old Steven Smith of Lake Elsinore, is now in custody; in a statement obtained by the Riverside Sheriff's Office, the authorities have now charged Smith with murder, and he has been booked into the Cois Byrd Detention Center.
The investigation, currently in the hands of the Riverside Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit, is ongoing, and the name of the deceased has not been released, pending the notification of next-of-kin. Officials have made clear that at this stage of the investigation, they are not looking for additional suspects.
