The Los Angeles Police Department is continuing its investigation into a hit-and-run incident that left a 72-year-old woman with severe injuries. The collision, which occurred on January 22, 2024, involved a late-model burgundy SUV. According to LAPD’s news release, the victim was walking eastbound inside a marked crosswalk at the intersection of Eighth Avenue and 60th Street when the vehicle struck her and the driver subsequently fled the scene.
As per details released by LAPD, the SUV was last seen traveling southbound on Eighth Avenue around 7:42 p.m. The Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded swiftly and transported the woman to a local hospital, where she is contending with her injuries. The police have made a plea for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward, offering a standing reward of up to $25,000 for details that lead to the arrest and conviction of the suspect. This reward is part of a city initiative established in 2015 to incentivize the public in aiding the capture of culprits involved in such incidents.
Law enforcement emphasizes the responsibilities of drivers in the wake of collisions, urging them to stop, provide necessary aid, and cooperate with the authorities as required by law. In a statement obtained by CBS Los Angeles, the LAPD detailed that the driver failed these obligations, instead abandoning the vulnerable pedestrian and eluding justice.
