The mercury is soaring in the City of Laurel and with it comes a shift in routine. The Department of Public Works (DPW) has made the move to adjust the times for trash, recycling, and compost collection as workers face the sweltering combination of high temperatures and humidity. The new collection schedule, kicking in from July 26 through September 2, is a measure to ensure the safety and well-being of the DPW staff who brave the heat to keep the city clean, as per the City of Laurel announcement.
Residents will need to adapt quickly, the collections are set to begin bright and early at 6 AM. In an advisory issued early morning July 17th through the City’s official website, Public Works urged the community to place their containers at the curb by 6 AM to ensure the new schedule runs smoothly. This change, while it could be an inconvenience, speaks to the city's recognition of the harsh occupational hazard posed by the current climate.
"Effective July 26, 2024, through September 2, 2024, collection services will begin at 6:00 AM," the City of Laurel stated, underlining the limited window within which this adjustment would be in place. As citizens prepare for this temporary shift, there is a collective sense of understanding for the city’s concern over its employees during this "difficult working environment."
DPW has extended its gratitude in advance for the cooperation, acknowledging the community’s role in making these heated days more bearable for everyone involved. The department has assured that any further information regarding the change in collection services can be accessed via their website.
