The streets of Central Florida are poised to firmly enforce a new kind of vigilance in the pursuit of child safety. As reported by ClickOrlando, Leesburg city commissioners are set to undertake their final reading of an ordinance that would introduce speed cameras in school zones.
The city is following in the footsteps of Eustis, a trailblazer within the state for such technological oversight. The proposed system in Leesburg threatens to automatically fine drivers $100 should they be caught tearing through these zones at a pace 10 mph higher than allowed. Eustis has already witnessed the efficacy of such measures, as ClickOrlando notes, their camera system wasted no time to swiftly identify and ticket 1,300 speeders in a mere five weeks of operation.
According to WESH, if the commissioners give the go-ahead, Leesburg could see these cameras standing sentinel in all school zones before the next academic calendar unfurls in 2025/2026. This second reading and all-important vote are scheduled for Monday night at the city commission meeting.
After initially cutting motorists some slack with a 30-day grace period, the cameras will be ready to zealously spot and fine those bold enough to risk their speed over the limit. "If approved, the cameras would be placed in all school zones in the city of Leesburg by the start of the 2025/2026 school year", according to a report from WESH.
