The City Council has designated July 7th through July 13th as Police Records Week, recognizing the often overlooked yet critical work of the records division within the Police Department. According to the Lewisville Police Department, the proclamation was officially made at a council meeting that took place last Monday at 7 p.m.
Announcing the proclamation, the social media statement highlighted the team behind the departments' records - a commander, a records supervisor, seven full-time employees, and two part-time employees - who manage extensive paperwork related to a myriad of police activities including arrests and crashes. In managing open records, they always make an effort to warmly greet and assist all who enter the Police Department lobby, dealing with their busy schedules. The hashtag #LewisvillePD was joined by #RecordsClerks and #LoveMyTeam, celebrating the unity and dedication of the crew.
Police Records Week aims to shed light on the essential yet oft-unseen work done by the personnel tasked with organizing and preserving crucial documentation. These records are imperative for maintaining transparency and accountability within law enforcement operations. They serve as the foundation for legal proceedings, help in the exoneration of the wrongly accused, and are critical to researchers and journalists striving to understand patterns of policing.
