In Lewisville, the police department recently hosted an event that was anything but your typical day at the station. The Lewisville Police Department threw open its doors to the young members of the local summer camp, Lewisville Thrive. The visit allowed kids to get up close and personal with the everyday workings of law enforcement in a setting designed to foster community engagement, as per the Lewisville Police Department.
During their visit, the campers were allowed to "experience what it's like to sit in the chief's seat, explore police equipment, and even jumped for joy", the Lewisville Police Department detailed. The initiative is part of a broader effort by the department to build trust and foster positive relationships within the community by creating programs that are as much about education as they are about having fun. It's a rare chance for kids to see officers in a different light and, hopefully, to learn how to better relate with them.
Photographs accompanying the Facebook post showed smiling children decked out in junior-sized police gear, gleefully exploring the trappings of the police world. It was a day about dismantling barriers and demystifying the roles of law enforcement for young minds. However, the event was more than just a day of play. It also served as a subtle reminder of the importance of police visibility in non-enforcement capacities.
