Texas Governor Greg Abbott has sent over a hundred law enforcement officials to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to bolster security at the Republican National Convention (RNC), following the shocking assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Trump's appearance at the RNC marked his return to the public eye since the incident. The decision by Abbott to deploy these officers, "ensure there are ample security resources present to safeguard attendees," in a critical show of support during a tumultuous time, the Governor stated, as per the Office of the Texas Governor. The support from Texas includes personnel from several cities, with 27 officers coming from the Austin Police Department (APD).

Despite the statewide show of solidarity, the deployment comes at a time when APD is facing significant understaffing with a vacancy rate of 28 percent, the highest among the departments assisting, according to an interview CBS Austin conducted with Interim Chief Robin Henderson. This grim statistic contrasts with Dallas PD's 6 percent, Fort Worth PD's 11 percent vacant positions, and McAllen PD, which has not disclosed its vacancy rate. In response to inquiries regarding the sustainable provision of services to both Austin and the RNC, APD representative Michael Bullock emphasized the value of participating in such high-profile events, saying, "It is risk versus reward type, if we were at appropriate staffing levels, it would be less of a challenge."

The Governor's Office has underscored their readiness to extend similar assistance to the Democratic National Convention in August if requested. The deployment, which began on July 13 and is slated to end on July 19, is part of a mutual aid system known as the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC). This system, which facilitates disaster response cooperation across state lines, is expected to bear the financial costs of the Texas law enforcement presence, as outlined on the Governor's official website.

Despite these local challenges, APD’s Michael Bullock sees the RNC deployment as an opportunity for Austin's officers to learn from the experience of providing security at major events – crucial in a city that frequently plays host to large-scale gatherings. "Those large scale events are huge economic drivers for our city," Bullock told CBS Austin, noting that learning from these experiences is necessary to prevent falling behind.
