Los Angeles County Issues Excessive Heat Warning for Antelope Valley and Surrounding AreasSource: Facebook/US National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard

As the temperature climbs, Los Angeles County is gearing up for a span of extreme heat. The LA County Health Officer has issued an excessive heat warning effective Tuesday through Monday for Eastern and Western Antelope Valley, Antelope Valley, Western San Gabriel Mountains along the Hwy 14 Corridor, and Northwest LA County Mountains, announced the County.

Residents are urged to take all necessary steps to prevent heat-induced ailments, with a focus on the elderly, young children, athletes, and outdoor workers who are especially vulnerable. Public Health recommends staying hydrated, dressing in light-colored, lightweight clothing, and avoiding the outdoors during peak heat hours. Emphasis is also placed on never leaving children or pets in vehicles, as temperatures can soar rapidly to dangerous levels. "Although it's crucial that we take care of ourselves, it's equally important that we extend our hand to those in need," urged Muntu Davis, MD, MPH, LA County Health Officer. He further emphasized the threat posed by hot days and the importance of keeping cool and hydrated.

Recognizing the critical need for public respite spaces, LA County and City partners have arranged for cooling centers to operate during the extreme heat event. These centers offer a place for those without air conditioning and can be located through the Ready LA County website or by simply dialing 2-1-1. This service, along with other emergency preparedness information, can be accessed 24/7, benefiting residents and business owners alike.

In the event of power outages, which are not uncommon during heatwaves, residents are advised to visit their power company's website or contact them by phone to determine if rolling outages are scheduled. By staying informed, individuals can take proactive steps to mitigate the impact of the heat on their lives. "If you have an elderly or unwell family member or neighbor, check on them regularly to ensure they are safe and well," added Davis, highlighting the need for community vigilance during this baking period.
