With Los Angeles weather hitting extreme temperatures, the city's elders received a much-needed reprieve in the form of free air conditioners and utility bill discounts at a "Cool LA" heat relief event. The giveaway, hosted by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), the Los Angeles Department of Aging, and KBLA Talk 1580, saw hundreds of seniors from the Watts area being equipped with portable air conditioners at no cost.
At the event, which was both a response to rising temperatures and a nod to the increasing vulnerability of the city's senior population, Mayor Karen Bass expressed gratitude to the partner organizations. "As we continue to experience record-breaking heat, these resources can be lifesaving for our most vulnerable Angelenos," Bass said, in a statement obtained by the Mayor's office. On-site signups for LADWP's financial assistance programs, such as EZ-SAVE and Lifeline, were also made available to participants, further assisting with their ability to manage utility expenses.
Recognizing the disproportionate impact of heat on specific communities, Councilmember Tim McOsker highlighted the necessity of such initiatives. "This is why it is critically important to hold events like this one for our seniors in Watts," McOsker told the Mayor's office. In particular, areas like Watts endure higher temperatures due to urban heat retention.
LADWP Commissioner Nurit Katz reiterated the importance of keeping customers safe from extreme heat. "This program helps ensure that all LADWP customers have access to cooling as we face increased heat with climate change," Katz declared. Additionally, LADWP CEO and Chief Engineer Janisse Quiñones underscores the equity-focused mission of the initiative. Quiñones said that events like these are part of their "Powered by Equity" initiative to ensure all Angelenos benefit equitably from the shift to clean energy.
The city is taking strides to protect its residents from the heat, with Mayor Bass urging citizens to utilize available resources during the excessive heat warning. Sustained efforts to provide cooling resources and information indicate Los Angeles’ proactive approach to combating the potential hazards associated with an increasingly hotter climate.
