Maui County Set to Open Office of Recovery Resource Center in Lahaina for Wildfire SurvivorsSource: Google Street View

In the pivot away from temporary relief stations, Maui County is ushering a new chapter for its wildfire survivors. Set to open on July 3 at Lahaina Gateway, the Maui County Office of Recovery's new resource center promises continuous support for those affected by the recent devastation, albeit through a new avenue. This move comes on the heels of FEMA operations ceasing at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa and the Royal Lahaina Resort as of Saturday, as reported by Hawaii News Now.

The transition to the Office of Recovery at the Lahaina Gateway on Keawe Street means that Maui County officials will now assume the responsibilities once held by federal and state emergency services. The closure of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Disaster Recovery Center and the state of Hawaii's Community Resource Center on June 29 left an service gap that the local government is eager to fill. A scheduling system is expected to facilitate support, allowing community agencies that previously operated out of the former centers to continue their work. "[We are] committed to ensuring that survivors of the disaster continue to receive the support they need during this challenging time," explained Hawaii Emergency Management Agency State Disaster Recovery Coordinator Francis Kau, according to a statement obtained by Spectrum Local News.

As FEMA works to concoct more housing options for wildfire survivors in Lahaina, their teams are on the ground, collaborating with private homeowners. The initiative hinges on erecting free temporary housing units on cleared properties, a lifeline for those rebuilding without a secured housing alternative. In the interlude, the South Maui Parks Permit Office at KÄ«hei Community Center has shuttered due to a building safety issue, with County officials in search of a swift solution to resume services.

Amidst the shifts, the community's fortitude remains evident. FEMA's Disaster Recovery Center originally launched operations at the Lahaina Civic Center before moving to the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort earlier this April. Similarly, the state of Hawaii unveiled its Community Resources Center at the Royal Lahaina Resort and Bungalows. With the support system's metamorphosis into a scheduled program, long-term recovery and Disaster Case Management Programs will still be offered to help survivors navigate the aspects of their comeback journey. As the process of recovery unfolds, the commitment to providing aid appears unwavering.
