Russell "Rusty" Wilson, the esteemed Fire Chief of Mesquite, has officially announced his impending retirement, set to take place on Aug. 31, after nearly four years of committed service. Wilson took the helm in November 2020, during which he oversaw significant growth and progress within the department. In a statement released by the City of Mesquite, Texas, Wilson expressed his pride in having served the community, praising his team for their "unwavering commitment to safety and service" that he believes will carry on even after his departure.
Wilson's tenure has been marked by achievements that have fortified the Fire Department against the flames of an ever-expanding urban sprawl. City Manager Cliff Keheley remarked on Wilson's pivotal role, stating the Chief has "helped guide the expansion of the Fire Department to meet the needs of our growing community". Among the accomplishments are the start of construction for Fire Station 2, the design and construction processes for Fire Station 8, and a new Public Safety Training Facility. Wilson's ability to maintain the highest Insurance Services Office rating, the sanctioning of sweeping health initiatives, and the amplification of public education efforts stand as a testament to his leadership, as per the City of Mesquite, Texas.
Under Wilson's stewardship, not only did the Fire Department secure its stature with an ISO rating of 1, but it also fortified its rank and file, hiring 77 new firefighters. It furthered mental health support with a peer-to-peer program and devised a health and wellness initiative emphasizing cancer prevention and detection. His term was characterized by a series of service enhancements, like the inclusion of Ambulance 6 in full-time service, Ambulance 15 for peak times, and an innovative vehicle crash barrier known as an attenuator aimed to provide firefighters with additional safety on highway incident scenes.
Before his time in Mesquite, Wilson had already established a noticeable footprint in Texas's fire service landscape, drawing upon more than 35 years of experience in cities like Irving and Katy. His expertise was recognized statewide when he was convened in 2019 by Governor Greg Abbott to serve on the Texas Commission on Fire Protection, and when, in 2017, he was honored with the Texas Fire Chief of the Year Award by the Texas Fire Chiefs Association.
With the search for a replacement underway, the City Manager has assured the public that a new chief is expected to be announced by Oct. 1, ensuring a plan is in place to quickly fill the soon-to-be vacancy. Esteemed for his leadership and foresight, Wilson's impending retirement marks the end of an era for the Mesquite Fire Department — an era that has undoubtedly left a legacy of growth, resilience, and an indelible commitment to the community it serves.
