Over the span of just one week, the Metropolitan Police Department yielded the recovery of 44 illegal firearms from the streets of Washington D.C. As reported by MPDC's official release, these recoveries, which happened from Monday, June 24 to Monday, July 1 were the product of standard patrols and actions from various specialized units within the MPD aimed at interrupting the cycle of armed violence within the district.
The collection of seized firearms encompasses various types and calibers, including several Glock models and a P80 9mm caliber "Ghost Gun." Notable recoveries involved a Glock 22 .40 caliber found in the Unit block of Mississippi Avenue, Southeast, and a Smith & Wesson M&P 9 Shield 9mm discovered at the 900 block of L Street, Northwest. Individuals found in possession were arrested on charges ranging from carrying a pistol without a license to possession of large-capacity ammunition feeding devices, among others.
These discoveries highlight a continuous effort by the MPD to address the illegal possession and use of guns in the community. Arrests such as the case of 21-year-old Amari Dorn, who was charged with carrying a pistol without a license and other firearm-related offenses after being caught with a Taurus GC3 9mm on U Street. However, underneath the surface of these recoveries lies the persistent question of how these firearms find their way onto the streets. With ghost guns like the Glock 80 9mm and the P80 9mm caliber handgun appearing in the seizures, concerns about the mechanisms of arms trafficking, untraceable firearms, and their impact on urban communities remain starkly relevant.
.The MPD continues to urge anyone with information regarding illegal firearms to come forth.
