Earlier today, a Monroe County resident's call to 911 sparked a rescue operation that saved a man from drowning in a local pond. According to FOX 2 Detroit, the distress call came in at 12:05 a.m. from Lulu Road near S. County Line Highway in Summerfield Township, after the resident heard calls for help emanating from behind their home.
Deputies arrived to find a male approximately 20 feet from shore, struggling to keep himself above water. Monroe County Sheriff's Deputy Shawna Hester, without hesitation to fully evaluate the risks, bravely entered the water. Assisted by a flotation device provided by the homeowner, Hester was able to rescue the individual. The man was then transported to ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital for medical treatment, as stated in reports by ClickOnDetroit.
The subsequent investigation led deputies to discover tire tracks trailing from a nearby field into the pond. In line with what was reported by The Detroit News, this clue prompted them to retrieve an unoccupied Jeep Wrangler from the body of water.
The rescued man provided conflicting statements regarding whether there had been additional passengers in the vehicle, further complicating the investigation. Both the Monroe County Sheriff's Office and Lenawee County Sheriff's Office dive teams were involved in the recovery operation. Investigators are still trying to piece together the circumstances that led to the vehicle's submersion and are urging anyone with information to come forward by contacting the Sheriff's Office at (734) 240-7722, as per The Detroit News.
