Tragedy struck early yesterday morning in Hazel Park as fire officials reported that a 59-year-old woman and her 80-year-old mother were found dead after a house fire. The Hazel Park Fire Department, upon responding to a call made by a passerby who noticed smoke on Eight Mile Road, arrived to find the home at 1561 East Muir Avenue heavily engulfed in flames. The fire was eventually extinguished, but not before claiming the lives of the two residents, as reported by CBS News Detroit.

Fire Chief Richard Story told The Detroit News that the fire was likely burning for a significant time before being spotted. "I would assume the fire, by the amount of damage to the home, was probably burning for about a good hour before it probably broke through the roof, where somebody could see it," said Story. Officials are currently investigating the cause, but have mentioned smoking or an electrical issue might be to blame for the tragic event.

Adding to the sorrow, authorities revealed that a cat was also killed in the inferno, and two other cats from the home have not been found and may be lost in the neighborhood. The son of one of the victims and the husband of another were not present during the blaze, with one arriving on the scene afterward and the other being away in northern Michigan, according to information provided by The Detroit News.

Despite extinguishing the fire within an hour of arrival, the damage to the home was extensive. Plywood now covers what remains of the property's windows. Chief Story mentioned that the house still stands, but it may need to be quickly demolished due to the extent of the damage. A neighbor's garage also sustained damage from the fire, adding further impact to the community. The Oakland County Sheriff's Office has joined the Hazel Western authorities to further investigate the cause of the fire, with foul play not currently being suspected, as stated by The Detroit News.

The loss has indeed left its mark on the Hazel Park community, with neighbors and local residents mourning the abrupt loss of life. While investigations continue and residents speculate on the cause, fire officials urge the public to ensure that their smoke detectors are functional and that potential fire hazards at home are rigorously managed to prevent such tragedies from recurring.
