The Metropolitan Police Department has taken Charles Mitchell-Baynes into custody following a routine traffic stop that uncovered a trove of stolen Lululemon apparel and illegal substances. According to a police report, the arrest, part of the MPD's Robbery Suppression Unit efforts, occurred on Saturday, July 20, in the 3400 block of 12th Street NE. Mitchell-Baynes, a 30-year-old resident of Northwest, faces charges of felony receiving stolen property and possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
Officers on patrol flagged the vehicle for a traffic violation, which led to the discovery and resulted in them finding merchandise valued at over $3,800. This discovery paints a stark picture of the often unseen journeys of stolen goods through the city's underbelly, and it raises questions about the struggles of law enforcement to curtail such illicit activities within our community borders. Along with the high-value athletic wear, authorities reportedly found substances suspected to be marijuana, prepared in a manner suggesting an intention for distribution.
The police have not yet closed the book on this case, signaling that further investigation may unravel more connections or lead to additional arrests in connection to the stolen merchandise. The MPD has urged anyone with information to contact them at (202) 727-9099 or to send a tip via text to the Department's TEXT TIP LINE at 50411, offering a reward of up to $1,000 for details that could lead to the arrest and indictment of individuals associated with this crime.
