A fatal collision involving seven vehicles at the intersection of Northland Drive and Plainfield Avenue in Plainfield Township resulted in multiple injuries and left one person dead yesterday afternoon. The accident occurred before 3:30 p.m., as first reported by FOX 17 News. Michigan State Police informed that a car, while trying to make a left turn onto Plainfield Avenue, sideswiped a number of vehicles before being struck from behind, subsequently colliding with an oncoming vehicle.
According to WZZM 13, the chain of events started when a vehicle sideswiped multiple vehicles that were waiting in the left-hand turn lane. The first vehicle in that queue was rear-ended and pushed into another vehicle traveling southbound on Northland Drive. Investigation by Michigan State Police suggests this as the preliminarily understood cause of the accident. The driver of the vehicle that initiated the chain reaction was declared dead at the scene.
As emergency crews, along with Michigan State Police, managed the scene of the collision, Northland Drive was shut down for about four hours, leading to significant traffic delays in the surrounding area. WOOD TV reported that Northland Drive had to be closed between Grand River Drive and Plainfield Avenue while the investigation was underway.
Furthermore, the crash scene exhibited extensive damage, including at least one vehicle that showed signs of fire damage. While the Michigan State Police carried out their investigation, tow trucks and cleanup crews worked to restore order and reopen the roadway to the traveling public by the evening.
