Commuters in Pasadena are set to experience a boost in accessibility and convenience as the Department of Transportation introduces five new solar-powered real-time bus arrival devices at local bus stops, as reported by the City of Pasadena. These devices are designed to aid customers with visual impairments, providing real-time bus arrival information through a text-to-speech feature upon request.
The initiative not to only furnish bus patrons with up-to-date transit times but to also enhance the accessibility for visually impaired individuals is part of a city-wide effort to support inclusive transportation. The DOT's deployment includes selected sites recognized for high-traffic usage, ensuring a significant impact on daily commuters.
According to the announcement made by the Pasadena Department of Transportation, the five units will be installed at the following locations: Northbound Lake Avenue and Villa Street, Northbound Raymond Avenue and Holly Street, Southbound Fair Oaks Boulevard and Woodbury Road, Northbound Lake Avenue and Colorado Boulevard, Eastbound Foothill Boulevard and Sierra Madre Villa Avenue.
These enhancements, funded through the Caltrans Low Carbon Transit Operations Program (LCTOP), will be permanently established over the forthcoming months. A key component of the project is to gather customer feedback to assess how effectively these devices meet the users’ needs. Commuters will have the opportunity to weigh in by taking a survey, available via a QR code on each Papercast unit or directly at Bit.ly/PapercastSurvey.
