A Pennsylvania man has been found guilty on multiple charges in connection to the Jan. 6 Capitol riots, including felony assault against law enforcement with a weapon. According to a press release from the Department of Justice, Terry L. Allen, 65, of Spring Mills, faced a U.S. District Judge who rendered a verdict on several counts that not only highlight the violent nature of the day but also the ongoing ramifications for those who participated.
The case, overseen by Judge Amit P. Mehta, concluded with Allen's conviction for entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds with a dangerous weapon, among other felony and misdemeanor charges. Video footage from the day revealed a scene with Allen wielding a flagpole as a weapon against officers. As reported by the Department of Justice, the evidence presented at trial showed Allen using his wooden flagpole to shove and assault law enforcement officers in a manner likened to stab-motion.
Additional details regarding the altercation were captured on body-worn camera equipment, showing Allen later in the day with a black metallic pole and a flagpole. Faced with pepper spray from the officers, Allen retaliated by throwing a pole at the law enforcement personnel in close range. The investigation, which led to Allen's arrest on July 6, 2023, was a combined effort between multiple agencies, including the FBI’s Philadelphia and Washington Field Offices, the U.S. Capitol Police, and the Metropolitan Police Department.
The ripple effects of January 6 continue to spread with the DOJ stating more than 1,470 individuals have been charged since the Capitol breach. Allen is among the over 530 people indicted for assaulting or impeding law enforcement. With ongoing investigations, the impacts of that day remain as sharp as a the images that haunt the national consciousness. Allen's sentencing is scheduled for November 14, 2024, concluding yet another chapter in this drawn-out legal saga.
