Tragedy unfolded outside the Al-Aqsa Islamic Society in North Philadelphia when 43-year-old Raheem Jefferson was fatally shot in an "execution-style" killing, NBC Philadelphia reports. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon just before 5 p.m. on the 1500 block of Germantown Avenue, Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small confirmed to the press.

Upon arrival, the police discovered Jefferson in the mosque's parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds, including a critical injury to his head, police found him and the footage of the event speaks a chilling narrative, revealing Jefferson collapsing as the gunman continued to shoot, standing over him firing a total of 17 shots, a detail highlighted by 6abc. Jefferson succumbed to his injuries at an area hospital where he was pronounced dead, and in the wake of the shooting, no arrests have been made and, as of yet, no weapons recovered.

The area around the mosque was quickly cordoned off with Chopper 6 capturing the scene overhead as forensic teams and officers began their investigation. The violent act has sent ripples of shock and concern through the community; the Philadelphia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) issued a statement expressing both dismay and a call to action. "We are shocked and concerned by this tragic incident," said Ahmet Tekelioglu, CAIR-Philadelphia's executive director, noting the "beautiful and dedicated community" of the Al-Aqsa Islamic Society mosque, as CBS News Philadelphia reported.

Tekelioglu further stated, "Whether this tragic shooting is related to the gun violence epidemic in our city or another reason, we call on our local leaders and interfaith groups to stand together to offer their support to the Al-Aqsa community," and urged law enforcement and city officials to keep the public informed and to "ensure every angle is meticulously explored."
