Philadelphia's Parks & Recreation department is launching a hiring initiative for over 30 recreation leader trainees, aiming to build a team reflective of the city's diverse populace. According to a release on their official website, these positions serve as a jumping-off point into a fulfilling career complete with full benefits and union representation, targeting individuals eager to foster community growth through engaging recreational activities.
Modeling this path, Natalie Felix DiDonato, who began her journey on a part-time basis in 2015 and now works within the department, elucidated the role's multifaceted nature in a statement. The role of a recreation leader trainee is multifarious, partnering with local communities to create and lead a slew of activities — from sports to arts, and educational programming. DiDonato shared, in the job description detailed by the city's website, her enjoyment in "working with people from all walks of life" and the importance of listening, "Sometimes people just need to be heard."
Recreation Leader Trainees function as essential aides in the construction of community fabric by sharing resources like job opportunities, and educational workshops, they also organize public events that imbue neighborhoods with vibrancy and cohesion. In keeping with DiDonato’s remarks, the role is well-suited for individuals who are “a people person, and enjoy learning and growing with others."
