A Philadelphia man has been handed a 23-year prison sentence for his role in a sex trafficking operation that included a minor among its victims. Kevin L. Smith, 29, faced the consequences of his actions in a United States District Court, where Judge Karen Spencer Marston prescribed lengthy imprisonment along with ten years of supervised release, as announced by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Recorded to have pled guilty on December 2, 2023, Smith admitted to one count of sex trafficking of a minor and three counts of sex trafficking involving force or coercion. His operation spanned across Philadelphia and neighboring counties, where he was found to maintain and advertise a minor for commercial sex acts knowingly. Moreover, Smith managed to coercively operate a sex trafficking enterprise that lasted two years, from July 2015 to July 2017, employing threats and violence to manipulate two women into prostitution.
"Smith's sexual exploitation of his victims was horrific," U.S. Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero stated, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office. She hoped the verdict might offer the victims solace and justice. Romero's office, in collaboration with federal agencies like the FBI, remains committed to curbing the injustices wrought by sex trafficking.
The case against Smith is part of the larger framework of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative launched by the Department of Justice in 2006 aimed at addressing the epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Federal, state, and local resources are being mobilized to apprehend and prosecute offenders on the internet and to rescue affected children.
Several local law enforcement agencies collaborated in this investigation, including the Delaware County Criminal Investigation Division, Bensalem Police Department, Media Borough Police Department, Tinicum Township Police Department, and the Philadelphia Police Department. Assistant United States Attorneys Brittany Jones and Priya T. DeSouza led the prosecution of the case, sealing the fate of a criminal who not only damaged lives but also shattered the sense of safety within the community.
