Construction work on the Stanton Avenue Complete Street project enters its second phase today, with upgrades to improve mobility and safety across the thoroughfare. The Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI) is set to install a concrete raised bike lane and an integrated bike lane bus boarding island that promises to streamline the transit experience for bikers and bus riders alike. Additional changes include new signage, flexible posts, and pavement and marking updates, according to the City of Pittsburgh press release.
According to the project announcement, these improvements are part of a continued effort to enhance the infrastructure for a safer, more equitable movement of Stanton Avenue's diverse users. Mayor Ed Gainey emphasized the city's commitment, "The Stanton Avenue Complete Street project demonstrates how hard our teams at the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure work to make our streets both accessible and equitable. Accessibility and equity are crucial components of achieving zero traffic fatalities," Mayor Ed Gainey stated, as per the City of Pittsburgh.
The ongoing project kicked off after the successful completion of its first phase, which saw the implementation of measures like speed cushions, bicycle climbing lanes, and permanent signage. These initial steps aimed at a safer and more user-friendly Stanton Avenue. With Phase II, the city addresses the area's documented speeding problems and aims to enhance the overall transit experience with improved bus stops, cyclist safety, and pedestrian access.
DOMI's latest efforts will begin with the construction of the bus boarding island prioritized for completion within the week. The remainder of the work, including repaving, adding pavement markings, vertical elements, and signage, is expected to span the next two weeks. Residents and commuters can keep abreast of the project's progress and updates on the Complete Streets Engage Page. For additional inquiries or concerns about traffic calming measures across Pittsburgh, the public is encouraged to reach out to DOMI via their email at [email protected].
