Pittsburgh's CitiParks is stepping up to provide some much-needed relief. Five Healthy Active Living Centers across the city have been designated as Cooling Centers for Sunday, July 28, according to an announcement from the City of Pittsburgh. Moreover, these designated safe havens for beat-the-heat respite will be welcoming residents affected by the scorching temperatures from 12 PM to 7 PM.
Especially for the city's most vulnerable populations, such as the elderly or those without air conditioning, the chance to seek somewhere to just cool off can be a question of health, or sometimes, survival. Open doors and a respite from the oppressive heat are what the centers aim to provide. Below is the list of locations, made available for residents to easily access:
- Beechview Healthy Active Living Community Center
1555 Broadway Avenue
Pittsburgh, PA 15216 - Brighton Heights Healthy Active Living Community Center
3515 McClure Avenue
Pittsburgh, PA 15212 - Greenfield Healthy Active Living Community Center
745 Greenfield Avenue
Pittsburgh, PA 15217 - Homewood Healthy Active Living Community Center
7321 Frankstown Road
Pittsburgh, PA 15208 - South Side Healthy Active Living Community Center
12th & Bingham Streets
Pittsburgh, PA 15203
The city's activation of these Cooling Centers is part of a larger effort to proactively address the public health challenges posed by extreme climate conditions. In times of such intense heat, citizens are encouraged to not only keep themselves hydrated but also to check in on their neighbors, particularly the elderly, who may be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.
