Drivers navigating Highland Park are set to witness the deployment of stronger, more permanent traffic safety measures. The Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI) embarks on a 'hardscaping' project this week at the intersection of Negley Avenue and Bryant Street, an initiative designed to replace the provisional traffic safety installations with sturdier, enduring materials, according to the City of Pittsburgh press release.

Implemented in 2015, the initial quick-build curb extensions made use of pavement markings and plastic flex posts to enhance sightlines and shrink pedestrian crossing distances. Mayor Ed Gainey praised DOMI's commitment to public safety, stating, "The innovative minds in the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure have the safety of Pittsburgh residents as their top priority. Their traffic safety measures enhance the well-being of residents and improve roadway safety without the need for extensive construction," according to a release issued.

This week's upgrades will involve the removal of two of the four temporary curb extensions, in favor of permanent concrete ones that will feature ADA-compliant ramps to improve accessibility. The intersection is also set to get new stop signs and high-visibility 'piano key' style crosswalks along with stop bars to more effectively manage the flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

Estimated to wrap up within a week, the curb extension work will precede the pavement marking jobs, which should be completed by the end of the following week, as DOMI officials reported. Area residents can anticipate minimal disruptions to traffic during this period of construction.
