Electricity was restored at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport after a substantial power outage disrupted operations and led to numerous delays on Saturday evening. The outage, lasting approximately two hours, was resolved by 7:30 p.m., according to officials. However, the event was not without consequence—dozens of passengers experienced significant delays, particularly those flying with Frontier Airlines, who found themselves waiting close to three hours for their baggage to arrive, as reported by CBS News.
The sudden loss of power forced flyers to adapt quickly, and many took to social media to express their frustrations. According to a report by CBS News, travelers tweeted concerns ranging from the discomfort of the unexplained darkness to the rise in temperature inside the terminal. One passenger compared the experience to being in a Marvel movie, while another directly reached out to BWI and Delta for updates, stating on X, "Hi @BWI_Airport it's starting to get hot in here. What's up with this power situation." Meanwhile, another expressed worry over potentially missing a connecting flight due to being stuck on a plane for over an hour.
At the heart of the issue was the travelers' reliance on the facility and the expectation of uninterrupted service. Terence Elliott, a fly traveler, expressed that "an organization as large as Frontier (is) that they wouldn't have a contingency plan in place for something like this, and obviously they do not," as detailed by WBALTV. BWI officials responded by noting that it is up to each airline to accommodate their customers in such situations.
Frontier Airlines, in a statement as per WBAL TV, acknowledged the outage's significant impact on its operations: "The extended power outage at BWI impacted all aspects of our operations. Unfortunately, the situation, which was completely beyond our control, left us without any way to access baggage security doors and gates and meant our teams were unable to deliver bags to waiting passengers during the outage. We sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience they experienced." Additionally, a spokesperson for BWI issued an apology, appreciating passengers' patience as they worked to restore power throughout the terminal.
