With energy demands on the rise in north Texas, Prologis has unveiled a battery energy storage system (BESS) that aims to enhance grid stability in Arlington. As the maiden project for the global logistics real estate leader in the state, the installation is set to dispatch enough electricity to support more than 1,700 households during the peak demand periods managed by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT).
According to the City of Arlington, Texas, the BESS is positioned at Prologis’ Interchange 20 property and represents the company's largest single-assembled energy storage system worldwide. Functioning as a power hub within a recently constructed distribution center, it marks the first of its type in the company's portfolio. Prologis anticipates propelling its Texas BESS capacity to 100 MW by concluding 2025 — a move expected to generate enough power for over 17,000 homes.
Vibhu Kaushik, Global Head of Energy, Utilities and Storage at Prologis, underscored the project's significance, stating, "In the face of Texas's surging energy demand, innovative battery storage solutions like Arlington's project become not just beneficial but essential." He informed the City of Arlington, Texas, "Within Prologis, we're leveraging the potential of existing real estate, deploying energy assets that deliver reliable, sustainable power to our customers and the communities we proudly serve".
Leveraging its vast portfolio of strategically located real estate, Prologis is maximizing throughput near essential infrastructure like ports and highways as energy hubs, aiming to satisfy growing industrial demands. Economic Development Specialist for the City of Arlington, Marcus Young expressed the value of partnering with companies such as Prologis, saying the City intends to leverage on high-potential space to meet vigorous market demands. This synergy fosters economic expansion by attracting and keeping businesses through the promise of grid resilience and the potential for lower energy costs.
