A concerning trend has emerged in Arcadia and other Southern California communities as a hidden camera was recently discovered concealed in the bushes of a residential front yard. The device, found on the 1600 block of Oakwood Avenue, sends a pressing reminder for residents to remain cautious about their home security.
According to a statement from the Arcadia Police Department reported by NBC Los Angeles, the camera was "positioned in a manner that it was capturing other homes in the area" and was linked to a mobile hot spot. This setup suggests that the camera was relaying footage to a cloud-based application, potentially for the purpose of monitoring the comings and goings of the neighborhood's residents.
While addressing the incident, the Arcadia Police suggest that these hidden devices are likely linked to burglary operations. Along with the camera found in Arcadia, similar devices have been located in Alhambra, Santa Barbara, and Garden Grove, marking an unsettling pattern. The police shared a list of precautionary measures, encouraging the community to invest in home security systems and keep their properties well-lit and maintained.
"Officers examined the camera and there was no internal storage; however, a mobile hot spot was connected to the camera," the police indicated in a news release obtained by ABC7. This modus operandi reveals that when the cameras are strategically placed hidden in the foliage, it allows suspects to surreptitiously analyze targeted homes and their occupants' routines, which assists in planning their illicit activities. The police have urged residents to lock doors and windows as a basic but crucial deterrent against unauthorized entry.
