In a unanimous decision, the Santa Monica City Council has taken a step toward reviving the city's beloved Civic Auditorium, a landmark venue that has been dormant since 2011. The council voted to begin negotiations with Revitalization Partners Group, LLC (RPG) to restore and manage the space. RPG, a consortium of professionals with backgrounds in live entertainment, real estate development, finance, historic preservation, and public-private partnerships, was one of four firms to submit proposals for the redevelopment project.
RPG's team features notable players such as Geyser Holdings, with their extensive real estate experience, and The Azoff Company, steered by Irving Azoff, a name well-known in the entertainment industry for his work with top musical acts and for restoring Inglewood's Forum. Despite facing seismic issues that prompted its closure, the auditorium previously hosted a variety of high-profile events, including Oscar shows and concerts, playing a significant cultural role in the region. With the city seeking to reclaim this historic site's vitality, these negotiations represent a critical initial move.
According to the city's press release, The Make Good Group and the Oak View Group are also part of RPG, bringing their expertise in sustainability and venue development. Live Nation, the global leader in live entertainment, is part of this consortium as well, promising a formidable operational backing for the auditorium.
The site, idle since its closure and designated as "surplus" by the Surplus Land Act, is projected to regain its former glory and contribute anew to the cultural and economic vibrancy of Santa Monica. RPG has pledged to provide $350,000 upfront to cover the city's costs associated with these negotiations. They are expected, having been abounded with diverse expertise, to provide a project scope and timeline for council consideration by early 2025.
The resurrected Civic Auditorium is anticipated to emerge as a cultural hub once again, subject to the success of these negotiations and the completion of the required assessments, including those in historic preservation, seismic retrofitting, and construction costs.
